About

she was born on the 4th july 1919 in Aylesbury Buckinghamshire, she was one of 11 children born into a desperately poor family which resulted in all the children going into care and into a childrens home in whitley bay. She returned home when she was 16 and went into domestic service.

Ivy married at 19 ad had 2 children veronica and james during the war years they moved to Oldham as her husband was an Oldham man, she found it daunting with it’s chimneys, smog and little greenery but came to love the people in Oldham and soon made many friends although the marriage was not to last and several years later met and married a catholic man William Rodgers.

She went onto have two more children mark and maria and although not a catholic at this time she still attended mass every Sunday with her family and after several years obtained a blessing from the bishop and converted to a catholic by father glynn in 1965 at st aidans Royton.

A little about our mum from veronica and maria

Mum was a very giving person who always felt it to be important to have at least one holiday a year to get away from the hustle and bustle and ensured her 4 children had just that, and over the years she also insisted her 9 grandchildren did too.

After many years along came her 10 great grandchildren and if she could help financially they too had holidays, mum lived quite independently until 2005 in her flat, her health deteriorated and she could no longer take care of herself and moved in with her daughter maria.

Mum was happy and comfortable she had her last holiday in august with her daughter, grand daughter and 4 great grandchildren, she was looking forward to another short holiday in spetember but sadly had a stroke and passed away peacefully with her family around her.

A little about our grandma from Amanda

firstly even though the age gap was there she was my soul mate i could literally tell her anything from havin a poorly finger which she would nurse better to growing up as a rebellious teenager and complaining about mum and dad to pulling my hair out with my four boys and grandma would always be there to help and suggest ways of dealing with the problem at hand. I used to love going to granny goo’s to sleep it means sweeties, pop and lots of t.v and cuddles and it’s true what everyone says granny certainly didn’t know how to say no. I would sit in front of the tv with grandma stroking my hair and brushing it after my bath to tucking me in at the end of the night, we would sit and read poetry books until we got sleepy.

Grandma was such a joker she was always playing tricks and would cry with laughter at our suprise, she loved to see the shock on our faces when she would do or say something so unsuspecting.

Grandma always said to me her wishes when her time came to leave us all would be to have her mind in tact, have her family around her and go peacefully in her sleep, and she was granted that wish.

Grandma loved the closeness of the family and never ever forgot a birthday she would ensure shopping for cards weeks before someones birthday to make sure she had one.

My grandma was very proud of her family of whom she loved dearly, and i am sure she would be proud of herself for how we all turned out, especially my mum maria who cared for grandma so well and grandma made it clear she was very lucky and thankfull for the care she got from my parents and that they went above and beyond what was not expected of them just to make them comfortable.

Grandma was the best and it will break our hearts not to see her lovely warm smile again but we will never forget her!
